"Exploring the Symbolic Power of the Wind: How it Represents the Holy Spirit and the Breath of Life"

The first sound I awake to and the last sound I hear when I go to bed is like a rushing wind in my ear. Interestingly, I don’t live near the ocean but without warning, my mind creates this persistent sound and commotion. It baffles the medical community, each pushing it off to a different specialty which all end with no answers. Like Paul accepting his “thorn in the side”, it is humbling for me. I cannot control “tinnitus “ anymore than the disciples could stop the winds stirring up the sea. I must just continually turn to Jesus to calm my anxiety and hear Him say “Be still”. As I study His Word and write these meditations in the morning, I suddenly realize His Word has calmed the sound for that time. And I think , “Ahh! Jesus, our Jehovah Rapha. “This is my comfort in my affliction, That Thy word has revived me.” Psalm 119:50

In Greek, it is “pneuma“ and in Hebrew, it is “rauch.“ In Genesis, it is the breath of life that God breathed into Adam. In Ezekiel , it “is the Spirit of God as the breath/wind of God, moving over the dry bones of Israel bringing new life…”. And of course on the day of Pentecost as described in Acts 2:2: “And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.” The Holy Spirit, the very presence of God, filled the whole room.

Recently we had set up dinner on our back porch. Suddenly it seemed cooler and the wind picked up blowing the plate of food right off the table. That is the illustration shown by John of the Holy Spirit.  “Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

Just as the sound of rushing wind in my ear is real but no one can see it, the Holy Spirit lives within a person's heart to change them from within. John 16:8-10 tells us that the Spirit convicts the world of the sin of unbelief in Jesus Christ as God’s Son but once we believe, the Spirit of Wisdom convicts us of righteousness. We are not condemned for a sin but reminded we are righteous before God because of the sacrifice of His Son. With that grace upon grace , we can confess our sins and  “He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. “ 1 John 1:9

Whether it be a warm southern breeze or a cold north blast, the wind refreshes and revives us. When out in nature, I can’t hear the false wind sound in my ear. I believe the Holy Spirit does just that- refreshes and revives and drowns out the lies of Satan so we can be alive in the presence of our Father.
