Finding Light in the Darkness: Trusting in the Divine for Guidance and Comfort

Moonlight on lake

This is one of the most beautiful photos I’ve captured. The full moon reflecting the light in the darkness from the sun onto the water just as God designed man to reflect the Light from His Son upon the earth. To the left side of the photo, the tree appears to be burning but not consumed, just as the “burning bush” appeared to Moses when God called him to lead his people out of Egypt and revealed His name “I AM WHO I AM.”.

Isaiah 58 is a warning to the Israelite's that their way of fasting is only for show while in real time, they are not obeying God to take care of His people in love and compassion. Therefor, their fasting receives no answers . However, if they put into action the  love of God by humbly serving and restoring those oppressed, God will cause His Light to shine through them like the morning sun and the power of the Holy Spirit, just as in the example of the burning bush not being extinguished.

God desires to reveal Himself to us as the I AM and He promises to hear when we call with His answer, “Here I Am.”

I love that image of “your righteousness will go before you and the Lord’s glory shall be your rear guard.” We know that we have no righteousness of our own (“all our righteousness is as filthy rags”Is.64:6) but  instead, it “is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.” Phil.3:9 . Then, His glory will shine and follow us  so we are surrounded with the Light of His inextinguishable love.

When Abraham obeyed God to take his son Isaac up the mountain to worship and sacrifice Isaac, Abraham trusted God would provide another sacrifice. (Genesis 15:6: "Abraham believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness") . So when Isaac called out to his father Abraham, “Father, where is the sacrifice?” , Abraham responded with the same assuring words of His Father God ,”Here I Am.” God’s glory was Abraham’s rear guard as the ram in the thicket became the sacrifice and father and son went down the mountain together.

We obey because we trust the One who already provided the ultimate sacrifice . We love because God first loved us and gave up His Son so the Light of Christ forever surrounds us ahead and before. “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ .” 2 Corinthians 4:6

Today, much darkness seems to consume us in society and personally. We don’t understand. We want to control. Trust in the One who has already provided the sacrifice for He longs for us to ask,

”Father, can you hear me?”

"Yes, my child, Here I Am.”

Amen.
