How can we maintain faith in the midst of life's tumultuous waves?

When I was a little girl growing up on the Atlantic Ocean, my parents would take my sister and me to Point Pleasant beach a few times in the summer. The waves were not like the Gulf Coast in Galveston, TX. These were rough and cold, even in the hot sun. Once a wave hit my little body, I’d fall down, be tumbled, and get a mouthful of sand and salt. Every time I would try to stand up, I would just be tumbled again. They overwhelmed me but my memories of those visits still bring joy. I was with my family and my Dad was big and strong to finally rescue me from another tumble. So I take this next verse literally😊as my Dad represented God to my childish mind.

“When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.” Psalm 37:24
Oswald Chambers was a late 19th century artist turned preacher whose teachings were called rare and insightful. His life was filled with much struggle and he died young at 43 after an infection from surgery yet in that short life , he left some beautiful writings. This portion of his devotional on how to maintain faith struck me as I have felt overwhelmed with waves of responsibility. Like as a child in the ocean, I think I’m getting my footing but another crashing wave takes me under. I can say as did David “If the Lord had not been on our side …Then the waters would have engulfed us; the torrent would have swept over us; the raging waters would have swept over us…Our help is in the name of Yahweh, the Maker of heaven and earth.“ Psalms 124:1, 4-5,8
I love how Mr. Chambers changed “conquerors” to “super-victors”. To the church of Colosse, Paul prayed the believers would “possess all fortitude (victory over circumstances) and patience (long suffering with people) with joy““(Col.1:11) “When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your consolations delight my souls”Psalm 94:19
Just as I clung to my Dad’s strong hand when the waves overwhelmed, I can cling to this promise from my Father God.
“No, in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that not even death or life, angels or rulers, things present or things to come, hostile powers, height or depth, or any other created thing will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord!“
Romans 8:37-39
We are “more than conquerors- we are super-victors”👆🙏Amen🫶🙌🏻💪
