How can we display the beauty of salvation in the midst of spiritual battles?

This Crape Myrtle flower is beautifully ornate atop the deciduous tree of the same name and it blooms from spring to fall. As I was reading about the armor of God that we should put on in Ephesians, I found the same wording in Isaiah describing God’s righteousness and salvation. What does this have to do with a flower? In Roman times, the soldiers helmets were ornate works of art with pastoral scenes painted on them as well as so protective , they could withstand the blow of the enemies’ battleaxe. A helmet showed protection, strength, beauty and peace which is what salvation in Jesus Christ attains for us.

“So stand firm and hold your ground, having tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS(an upright heart), [Is 11:5] and having strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. [Is 52:7] Above all, lift up the [protective] shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the HELMET OF SALVATION and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. [Is 59:17]” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭14‬-‭17‬‬‬

Armor of God

We are not fighting flesh and blood but the spiritual battles and forces of darkness but these verses remind me that we cannot allow our attempts to protect ourselves cover the beauty of salvation through Jesus Christ. Our fight is to display that beauty as we go into battle just as did the Roman soldier’s helmet.

Throughout the New Testament, there are three words I believe that keep us grounded in God’s power. “And be thankful. “ Find God’s beauty of your salvation in everyday life. Don’t spend a life saying, “When this happens, then I’ll be thankful, happy, content. “ The crape Myrtles bloom longer than any tree to remind us to find beauty in any season.
