The Unchanging Divine: A Constant in the Shifting Sands of Culture

Driving to Bible study last evening, this cloud formation caught my eye. I thought first it looked like an airplane. Or a large dove or an angel ascending into the heavens. But it wasn’t long before the clouds moved and the image melted into the sunset. It was temporary but with a message of the eternal that can be different to the different observers. One opinion was it looked like a dolphin. Another quoted this verse:

And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him. John 1:32

Clouds

At 74 I have witnessed how temporary life can be. What season you are in, good or bad, will end and like the clouds,  will reform into a new image. In fact, I had to lay writing this aside as our little 14 year old doggie got ill and passed away; a new season without her love and companionship.

Over all the different decades of my life, I’ve seen culture change over and over.

What we “see” in it around us will change; personal styles of clothing, hair, etc., architecture, transportation, technology. We can determine its age by the style and like some companies have found, products are built by certain segments of society and trying to change  its culture ruins its name.

In the midst of what we “see”, one constant remains; people need the unchanging Divine and Jesus who is the same, yesterday, today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

“Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations“ Psalm 119:89

“Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.” ‭‭2 Corinthians ‭4‬:‭16‬-‭17‬

Today let’s take our eyes off the things of this world and “Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day…Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place…Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness...Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!” 1 Chronicles 16:23,24,27,29-31
