"Understanding the Difference Between Perseverance and Endurance: Embracing Spiritual Growth Through Trials"

We have frequented this park in our old neighborhood since 1987 and watched many ducks and one male goose over the years. This was the first time I know of that a mother goose had a nest in full view . Father goose was nearby and would not allow anyone to cross the bridge towards his mate. Geese mate for life and protect each other. It takes 28 to 35 days of sitting on her eggs for them to hatch during which time , the Mother Goose doesn’t eat. What an amazing example to us of perseverance to receive a precious gift. 💝

The word perseverance and endurance are not the same word as endurance has a negative connotation which carries the emphasis on the pain of the moment. To just endure a trial can leave us no better in the end for we miss the lessons learned and the need to depend on our Heavenly Father’s  promises. Perseverance is not hanging on out of fear but it is like Biblical hope - an assurance of things not seen because we trust in the God who has promised “beauty for ashes.” It is remaining steadfast in adversity and in the midst of the trial, finding joy in the Lord, and new mercies each day.

In 2004 I ran a half marathon . There was a point I was just enduring the pain when I thought I was on mile 10 but was on mile 9. Then I saw my son and daughter around the corner ahead of me, and my hope was raised as I knew I wasn’t alone. They would be waiting at the finish line to crown me “finisher”. That has been my physical inspiration for spiritual perseverance ever since.

God’s Son is waiting at the finish line for me as I persevere through the race of life. Today’s pain is just a reminder that I need Him to protect me just as Father Goose stands guard over his family.  Persevere by just taking the next step with your eyes on Jesus.

”Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭3
